This subject is complicated because it takes in so much information.
I can share my experiences with you, and that of others. Having had my surgery in years past, enables me to now look back at what happened, and what I could have done to make it better.
The obvious here is, that you are now, a qualified candidate for surgery or gender reassignment. And that you have your letters from two doctors, which enable you to do so. If you do not have the letters and you are in the planning stage, then slow up a bit. There is no need for a rush to the operating table.
Many people rush through this process as a direct result of fulfilling their life long dream of correcting what we envision to have been a mistake. And while this is true, and understandable for one reason or another, it is most clearly not the way to do it. Many people have all of their plans in play before they even get to the letters required. Some people find doctors and have surgery without letters. Hopefully their foundation is intact. Something to think about is this: " Does transitioning end the day you set your surgery date"? Or the day you have your surgery? Or, " Does transition continue through your life on a day to day"?
The term "system overload" is a good term to use when referring to others who are unable to absorb too much new information, and who are not like us. But what about the fact that you are now in a beginning stage of your transition that includes: therapy, concealing , group therapy, transitioning in the work place, just coming out, learning to adapt to the ways of your new gender, or picking up the pieces a little at a time because you bypassed the socialization process and more. And maybe more issues like trying to focus while working on a changing relationship like your marriage!
This can create a system overload for us as well. There are a lot of issues on the table already and I want you to realize that some people are so deep in the forest that they can't see there way out as clearly as others. Sometimes we are also overwhelmed by all of the information coming into play as we seek correcting our dysphoria. Slow down and take your time and question yourself on whether you are making the correct decisions based on all of the information you need. Now, with all that in mind we can proceed. Where do I start getting the information?
The best resources are available on the web site, various consultations with different surgeons, friends with their experiences and contacts. As you filter through the options that are available, remember that there are things about your surgery procedures that are done differently by different doctors. You need to arm yourself with enough information about how each procedures is performed and then have a better idea which to choose from. A for instance is that you just cut a deal with a doctor in Thailand and now your looking at a package deal that will enable you to fulfill your needs. You think it does, yet are you looking at the outcome correctly? What if the package deal you acquired includes a face lift?
There are three procedures for this that include; 1. pulling of the outer skin and reattachment, 2. stretching of both the skin and muscles and reattachment or 3. the latter and even deeper which is more of a risk. What about the after effects? How long will this last before you need another face lift? Is this a quick fix, by a foreign doctor to take your money and be done with you? Can I go back to the doctor, as a Post-op if they are in a different country? Which procedure will be used for a breast implant? Will the doctor give me a high enough lip lift? What are the risks of implants moving around after surgery and who will correct it, if this happens? Will your doctor be giving you drugs in Thailand like Viox that is banned here in the states? This happened to me when it was still legal to use it, and I experienced something called Neuropathy after surgery for three months. Ouch big time. Will your nose or lips line up properly after those type of surgeries? If you have injections, will it dissipate? What type of injections are safer than others? Are jaw reductions safe? Or just too traumatic given your age? Will my hair grow back after a forehead lift? If I do not have all of my hair removed in my scrotum area, will I have hair inverted within, after the penile inversion. What are the risks of ingrown hairs within, if the hair grows back after surgery? Will the scraping and laser used during that procedure be as effective as doctors say it will be? Is there enough elasticity to create enough depth for a M to F surgery? Or enough elasticity for F to M for building a penis? Will you have enough depth through surgery (M-F). Will surgery enhance or reduce orgasms? If I have skin grafts, where should I allow for the scars that you will look at? How long will those scars be noticeable? How long will it take for the nerves to reconnect? How much nerve damage will be caused, and how much of it will be permanent? How much infection will occur inside the stitch lines, being your face or penile inversion or mamioplasty? Will the doctor insert drains? How long will you be removing stubborn stitches from scar lines? How dangerous is a brow reduction ? Will this involve a delicate procedure of removing your entire sinuses and grinding them down and possibly drilling on your sinus bones and then reattachment? Are you too old for surgery? Are you healthy enough? Should you get healthier? Should you loose weight to reduce risks at he time of surgery and or just enhance your appearance? Are you prepared to meet the Post-op costs for follow up? Who will perform your post-op needs after surgery? Will I have to shave the rest of my life? Will laser get all of my hair? Will electrolosis continue for the balance of your life? Should laser come first or after electrolysis? What damage is caused by hair removal? Does surgery escalate aging? Will the changes imposed be satisfactory to you ? What about your significant other? Are they prepared to watch you fully transition? Will this meet your needs or theirs? Will it ruin your relationship with your S.O. If you fully transition? Does surgery conflict with your Religion, if you are religious? If so, will you be the same gender in the next realm? Will you be a man or a woman in your dreams if you have surgery.
Will you be allotted time from work? Will you have funds to allow for time away from work and meet your financial obligations at the same time? What plan do you have for saving money for transportation to another country and the surgery and the regular bills, given your time off for the big changeover? Is it possible to have any of the surgery procedures performed by student doctors who are supervised by regular surgeons at a reduced costs, thus allowing for follow up post-op checkups here in the states? This is a big yes on that one, and should be researched locally before looking at the foreign markets of surgeries and package deals. I have recently targeted a date for a second face lift to be performed properly because It wasn't done right in Thailand. For $6000.00 I will get a face lift with the muscles and skin. Also a lip injection (my fat), injection on the lines from my nose down, and injections below my eyes and some snipping below the eyes and upper lids. This is a great price. I paid that much in Thailand. This Doctor in Portland Or., will be assisted with a more well known and favored Doctor who performs many surgeries in our community. The price represents one half the actual cost because he is still learning.
I have full confidence is both the success of this oncoming surgery. And I can be assured that my needs will be met as a post -op after this procedure. So there is much for you to do. And the options are variable. You need to take the time to educate yourself on every doctor, and every procedure. It will take time, do not rush this or it could cost you more money, unhappiness, or more risks with your health. Before you get in line to take your turn, be sure to take your time. The ramifications of your actions are great. You can not have enough foresight on this. There are consequences, danger, and many risks to consider. Get the whole picture into play before you make your moves. Good Luck to you.
